The Boom Boxes of Summer

Friday night, July the 15th, is a full moon. That means it's time for Full Moon Fiasco #77. This month's ride will be led by the newly handsome Brian DePauli. He suggests that everyone bring out their boom boxes, strap them to their bicycles and get ready to enjoy a nice long summertime bike ride. With good tunes and good people how could it be bad?

Meet at Turtle Park around 10:30pm the ride leaves at 11:00pm sharp!

If you hear a white man call a black man a nigger, you just witnessed a racist act. If you ride silently by and don't call the man out on being a fucking asshole, you are participating in the act. Everyone has the responsibility to call out assholes who litter and are dangerous on their bikes, and you especially have the responsibility to call out racists. What does the black man see who had his car kicked and sat on by a gang of white men? Obviously something so scary he began to move forward over a bike and then started to pull out his gun. He was a security guard, not a criminal. If you don't believe the incident at forest park parkway and taylor was racially charged, you are blind. It definitely was to the man in the car, especially after the man stopping traffic called him a nigger. Open your eyes to the viewpoint of the drivers. Don't kick cars (you probably own one, would you like them to kick yours while you are obeying traffic laws?). Just because you are riding in a mob of bikes doesn't make you always right. Riding in large numbers is a great feeling and why i ride every month. In fact summertime night biking is what i live for. Let's make sure our mob shouts down all asshole acts and racist acts and keep things positive. Let's try riding north of delmar for once. my name is ted. my number is 324 607nine. Call me next at the beginning of next month's ride if you want to talk about this or you think i've got something wrong.

You can complain all you want, but if a person is comfortable using that kind of term, then I doubt they give a fuck what you think. TRUST ME, your wasting your time, and creating a stir that will not end well for you. The summer rides are so big, that it is inevitable there are gonna be some rogues. So what... big deal.

Lee put it best "we ride on real streets with real cars" .. We have the same rights on the roads as cars. It is fun when we all stay together and ride through red lights to keep the group together. But, technically running red lights is illegal and some cars don't share in the fun of our night. If some minivan doesn't want to wait for us and starts to proceed through the middle of us .. just let the minivan go. If you ride in front of a car that is obviously not going to wait for you .. you are the idiot and probably deserve to be run over. Let's keep a good rep with cars .. and people carrying guns.

July 16, 2011 8:03 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure about this being fact - but this is what I saw of the minivan incident. The light turned red for us and as we usually do - we rode through the red light to stay as a group. A blue/green minivan didn't feel like waiting for us (he might have been on his way to work or something). The mini van inches he way through the intersection and it was OBVIOUS the he was going to keep going so along with most of the group we started going behind him to just let him go. Some idiot decided to ride in front of him since some of us feel like we own the road. The minivan bumped him and honked. People started backing up the guy that got hit and at least one person kicked the minivan. We are wrong for not just letting a minivan through that has a green light and doesn't share our fun. The minivan was wrong for hitting someone. Anyway, that is what I saw.

Real cars can do real damage to a mob of aggressive bike riders if you push them too far. Stay in one lane. Be courteous. And stop acting like rules do not apply to you because you're riding in a group with 300 other people.

The last thing I want is to get run over by an angry motorist because some guy 100 yards behind me decided he wanted to put his foot through someone's quarter panel or mouth-off to the wrong driver.

anonymous (two messages up) got the account fairly right. a few guys on bikes were circling the van, standing right in front of him, and egging the driver on. i missed any sort of racial aggression. i also missed a gun getting pulled and i'm pretty grateful for not being there, if that actually happened... hey the riff-raff will always be an element in an open club with publicly known departure times and dates, aside from a few incidents (which i agree shouldn't have happened), i still had a great time myself so thank again for the FBC members for having the stressful job of trying to remain somewhat responsible for all us idiots.

Help if you can, if not thanx anyway.
This is the bike as it was at 3:30 a.m. after the ride.

http://tinyurl.com/6boctf8

Stolen from in front of my house while I was trying to pee before locking it up in the backyard. I could hear them talking, 2 or 3 twenty-something punks talking about a short cut to the party heading west on Arsenal near the Hill towards Maplewood, Dogtown, U. City. I saw them ghost riding it three blocks away but by the time I ran down there I lost them.

I put a lot of time and a little money in it.
If you see it or know anything about it there is a reward.

FYI: Don't leave your car in Turtle Park overnight. After stumbling to Mangia on Grand and riding home to Benton Park I went to get my car from Turtle Park only to find my drivers side window bashed in, glass everywhere and the contents of my car thrown all over. There was nothing for them to take luckily, but it's a huge pain in the ass to get my car fixed. Nonetheless an epic first ride with the FBC. I will be back next month, and will not be leaving my car there overnight. Lesson learned.

yeah aimee as a long time dogtown resident, i can say that turtle park is kind of isolated and oakland suffers from some transient traffic. park up at clayton and tamm near felix's or on tamm in front of the houses, or in front of the big new condo building. they keep an eye out. i've parked there many many times over the years. never an issue. i would trust a car there more than even on my street which has some riff raff like oakland.

an open letter to captain safety, aka mike? aka drunken big mouth. i don't know you, and i don't want to know you. on two separate occasions we've had words usually revolving around you trying to tell me what to do even though i don't give a red rat's ass what your drunken ass has to say. when i heard what happened at that intersection, you are the first person that came to mind that probably started the whole thing and ended up using the n bomb. your over the top know it all attitude is just kinda ridiculous, and i can picture you doing it. maybe i am wrong.

in any event you are always way out of line. you need to shut your mouth, stop blocking intersections, take your medicine, and either sit back and enjoy the ride quietly like everyone else, or stay the fuck home. next time you get in my face i am going to knock you the fuck out. i've had enough. dude seriously everyone is trying to be nice, but take some meds and stop being a douchebag. and if i find out you called some poor bloke motorist the n word, i and several of my african american friends are going to take you on a slight detour next ride. we don't think it was funny at all. just saying....... seriously, if it was you, i'd stay home from now on. yeah it's that serious.

if it's not you, then i apologize. but you are going to have to stop being a dick. it's not an option. hopefully someone will either vouch for you or we can identify you as the douchebag that did it. anybody?

I agree that with such large rides, it's important that everyone is on their best behavior and confronts those who are not. As a 100% bike commuter who will get in a car maybe once a month (unlike several of you who ride your cars to the park and then proceed to bash/criticize drivers on the route), even I realize bikes AND cars have rights on the road. I hate being thrown bottles or taunted when I'm riding late at night by passing cars, but who's to say it's not a reaction to being harassed on one of these fbcs? Or in reaction to some cyclists being idiots and running through red lights in front of them? I know the FBC isn't a cycling rights advocate group by any means, but if we're going on a mass ride, let's at least try to have some harmony with existing traffic so we can give cyclists a good reputation in this city.

Might not be a big deal for the many of you who drive normally and only experience night-time biking (+ aggressive cycling because you're in a big group) during these rides. But think of those of us who depend on biking for EVERYTHING and do have to deal with drivers when we're alone. These rides aren't really helping us stay safe when we're confronted with angry drivers and we don't have a mob of 500 cyclists to back us up. Face it - cyclists are vulnerable on the road whether you like it or not.

Also, I'm surprised there are such rude folks on the FBC, even when you aren't buzzed by PBRs and flipping off your bikes. I'd much rather have riders who don't care about blatant racism or aggressive behavior to the innocent fuck off then Ted who's trying to bring up an important issue.

Not everyone (like the minivan driver, apparently) has the luxury or privilege of riding drunkenly through STL late at night on a bike. Some people have late shifts and are just trying to get home to their family, or are even on their way to a late work shift and may get fired for showing up late. Have some respect. They deserve it too.

I'm sorry if i'm late to the conversation. But we should have more rights than motorists. Not the same, i am a commuter and everyday i ride the same way, aggressively, safe smart in control but aggressive. And i'm not going to change that just because i'm riding with 300 other people. whether the incentive on these rides is to have fun or to promote cycling. We are 300+ cyclists on the city streets. people are going to notice us. especially when we take an entire lane or run a red light and hopefully motorists see that and remember that when i'm out there on my way home in the middle of the night. That hesitation they make to see if there is a 100 more riders behind me may save my life or more importantly my bike.

Also, I've brought some people on the rides that haven't ridden in their adult life and therefore probably don't know the laws, they just see a huge group of cyclists and so they follow like lemmings. The next thing they realize is that someone is yelling at them telling them there doing something wrong, if these things are going to go smoothly and without violence there needs to be more education and less argumentative shouting. And i think that was partially what caused the problem with the motorist sat. morning. Hell I wanted to ride past him and shoot him with a spray of my water bottle. But i didn't because i couldn't tell you if the kids in front of the car were in the right or if the motorist was. Both did things that were unbecoming. So as long as everyone is fine lets all just remember to talk to one another and answer questions people may have.

In the couple of seconds while passing the car i never heard any racist language. however i did hear "Bash his Fucking head in" or something like that.

I just would like to ask if anyone saw the girl crash right before the guy crashed into the barricades in forest park. First. i hope she is okay. Second. she crashed so hard i couldn't believe it. well they both did i guess...

According to someone that witnessed the intersection altercation, it was Captain Safety that dropped the "n" bomb before he took off in hot pursuit of the van.

Apparently, Captain Safety caught up to the group again and was overheard saying he "had to be held back" after chasing-down the van somewhere in or around Forest Park.

I'm all for being inclusive and welcoming to all Lifetime Members for Life - even the members that are a little rough around the edges - but Captain Safety habitually attracts the wrong attention and pushes people's buttons. It's going to end bad (for him or us) in the not-too-distant future.

I have to say, I am a fairweather FBC rider, most often coming when the weather's bearable and there isn't too much work on my plate. But my experience has always been 100% positive because it was about fun, helping each other, meeting new people, and glorifying STL and all of our fucking awesome bikes.

Sounds like there are some dicks in the bunch - and yeah, I've seen them, TRUST me - but let's not let this Captain Safety idiot or whoever else lower us to hate mail and threats of violence. I hope that if you are really one of those assholes, you can do the group a service and remove yourself from this activity. If you are a friend of any of these jerks and they are truly oblivious to the fact that no one appreciates their stupidity, please tell them that they are genuinely are not wanted and should come back in a few months with a new attitude.

I've been on lots of rides and never had a bad time - the ride ended with us shot gunning reebs under the arch and it was beautiful and hot and great as usual for that person who asked

Another sweet highlight was the random Hawaii flame dance performed by some one who brought torches and lamp oil or someshit. Thanks Hawaiian tropic - that was totally serendipitous and great

captain safety should probably just stay home from now on. he was not simply having a bad night. he is a bad night, each and every fbc ride. he's always in the middle of some odd shit. the next time i see him in the middle of an intersection i am just going to ram him full speed, an apt mechanism for dealing with full blown douchey douche bags.

mike you're simply not welcome at fbc rides, IMO

and for the rest of you anarchists, lee has been stopping to let cars through, at red lights, and more than urging people to stick to one lane (the right one) and pick up your fucking trash. since he's the only fbc captain, and an awesome one at that, i am going to do what he asks. it is the fucking reasonable thing to do you know.

for people that simply can't do that i'd suggest a ride the day before or the day after the full moon ride. maybe captain safety can lead you. i'll take lee.......... just my two fucking fbc for life cents.

Is it true that Captain Safety is going to be giving Deepthroat lessons behind the bathroom at Turtle Park next ride?
